How to Compare Two Steel Grating Quotations

The lowest total is not always the lowest comparable price. Two quotations can use different weight bases, fabrication assumptions, coating scope, documentation, packing, and delivery terms.

1) Confirm that both suppliers priced the same product

Compare grating type, bearing-bar size, bearing-bar spacing, cross-bar spacing, panel dimensions, material grade, surface profile, and finish. A small change in bearing-bar thickness or spacing changes steel weight and load performance, so prices are not comparable until the technical basis matches.

2) Understand the quantity and weight basis

One offer may use square metres, another theoretical weight, and another finished shipping weight. Ask for a line-by-line quantity and unit basis. Clarify whether banding, cut-outs, toe plates, and attached components are included in the quoted weight.

Specification and inspection scope should be normalized before unit prices are compared.

3) Compare fabrication scope

  • Standard panels only or fabricated-to-drawing panels.
  • Cut-outs, curved edges, banding, kick plates, and nosing.
  • Piece marking and panel-layout drawings.
  • Fixing clips and quantities.
  • Trial assembly or dimensional inspection where required.

A low material-only price may transfer cutting, welding, and site fitting cost to the buyer.

4) Read the finish and quality-document wording

For galvanized grating, check the referenced standard, treatment after fabrication, coating inspection, and repair method. Confirm whether material certificates, galvanizing reports, dimensional records, inspection photos, or third-party witness costs are included.

5) Normalize packing, freight, and delivery terms

Compare the same Incoterm and destination. Export packing, bundle labels, inland transport, port charges, ocean freight, insurance, and destination costs can move between buyer and seller depending on the term. Also compare the promised date from drawing approval, not an undefined “lead time.”

6) Use a one-page comparison sheet

Create columns for technical compliance, quantity basis, fabrication, finish, documents, inspection, packing, delivery term, validity, payment, exclusions, and total evaluated cost. Flag every difference that could create a later variation.

If you want a comparable manufacturer quotation, send the schedule, drawing, and competing technical basis. Commercial prices can be removed; the important part is making the scope consistent.
