Grating Terminology

Standard definitions for bar grating components and dimensions used in specification and ordering.

Bearing Bar

The main load-carrying bars that run in the direction of the span. Bearing bars support the applied load and determine the structural capacity of the grating panel.

Cross Bar

Bars that run perpendicular to the bearing bars. Cross bars connect and stabilize the bearing bars and contribute to the overall rigidity of the panel.

Spacing

The center-to-center distance between adjacent bearing bars (bearing bar spacing) or cross bars (cross bar spacing). Spacing affects load capacity, drainage, and slip resistance.

Span

The unsupported distance between supports in the direction of the bearing bars. Span is a key factor in load capacity––longer spans require stronger grating or closer spacing.

Banding

Flat bar or angle welded around the perimeter of a grating panel to provide a finished edge and additional support. Banding can improve handling and installation.

Nosing

A raised or serrated strip at the leading edge of a stair tread or step. Nosing improves slip resistance and visibility at the step edge for safety.

Toe Plate

A vertical plate or lip at the front edge of a grating panel or stair tread that prevents objects from sliding off and provides a visual edge. Often used on platforms and stair systems.
