Safety Gates for Industrial Platforms
Self-closing safety gates are the critical component at every platform opening, ladder top and stair access point. This guide covers gate sizing, material selection, compliance with OSHA 1910.29 and EN 14122, and how to include gates in your grating package.
Where safety gates are required
Any opening in a guardrail system that provides access to an elevated walking or working surface must be protected when not in use. The three most common locations are:
- Ladder openings: at the top of fixed ladders where the guardrail is interrupted for access. A self-closing gate encloses the opening and prevents accidental falls.
- Stair tops: where stairs meet a platform or walkway, the guardrail opening at the stair entry requires a gate that closes automatically.
- Loading and material-handling openings: mezzanine edges and pallet-drop zones need wider gates that can be manually opened for material transfer and self-close afterward.
OSHA and EN compliance
Both OSHA 1910.29 and EN 14122-3 specify that gates must provide protection equivalent to the surrounding guardrail. Key requirements:
- Top rail height: 1050 mm ± 75 mm (42 inches ± 3 inches)
- Top rail strength: withstand 890 N (200 lbf) downward or outward force
- Mid-rail strength: withstand 670 N (150 lbf)
- Self-closing mechanism: gate must return to the closed position when released
- Openings: no gap larger than 480 mm (19 inches) in any dimension when closed
Gate dimensions and sizing
Standard gate widths range from 500 mm to 1200 mm. The gate width is typically the clear opening between guardrail posts. Wider openings for material handling (up to 2000 mm) use double-leaf gates or sliding gate designs. Standard construction:
- Frame: tubular steel Ø33.7 mm or Ø42.4 mm, wall thickness 2.5–3.2 mm
- Hinges: heavy-duty weld-on hinges with grease nipples for maintenance
- Spring: adjustable-tension return spring, factory pre-set
- Latch: gravity latch or magnetic catch, depending on application
Including gates in your grating package
Safety gates are most efficiently procured as part of the complete platform or walkway package. This ensures:
- Gate dimensions match the actual guardrail post spacing on site
- Material and finish match the surrounding guardrail
- Mounting brackets are compatible with the guardrail post section
- One supplier is responsible for the entire edge-protection scope
When ordering, provide the opening width, guardrail post diameter and preferred material. Include the gate on the same drawing set as the platform or walkway layout.
