The basic steel grating price formula
A practical quotation model is: raw material and cross bars + welding or locking + panel cutting + banding and special fabrication + surface finish + inspection and documentation + packing + freight and commercial costs.
The exact ratio varies by specification and order. For that reason, a price per square metre cannot be compared without checking the construction behind it.
1) Bearing bars, mesh, and theoretical weight
Deeper or thicker bearing bars use more metal. Closer bearing-bar spacing also increases the number of bars per panel. Cross-bar type and spacing contribute additional weight and production work. The supplier should identify the grating designation, bar dimensions, spacing, and quoted weight basis.
A bar described as 3 mm nominal thickness is not interchangeable with a different tolerance basis. Confirm the applicable standard and permitted bar tolerance before comparing quotations.
2) Panel dimensions and fabrication complexity
Standard rectangular panels are efficient to produce. Irregular shapes, small infill pieces, diagonal cuts, pipe openings, kick plates, nosing, hinges, and removable details require additional cutting, fitting, welding, and inspection.
Net area alone can hide this work. A platform with many openings may contain less grating area but more fabrication labor than a plain platform of the same footprint.
3) Material and surface finish
Carbon steel, stainless steel, and aluminum have different raw-material and processing costs. For carbon steel, hot-dip galvanizing is normally priced from charge weight and coating requirements. Venting, drainage, panel geometry, surface preparation, and repair requirements can affect processing.

4) Engineering, inspection, and documentation
A takeoff from GA drawings, detailed panel layout, fabrication drawings, calculations, inspection plan, material certificates, coating reports, third-party inspection, and project-specific document formats all require scope and time. State these deliverables in the RFQ so they are not added after award.
5) Packing and freight
Export packing may include skids, steel straps, protective separators, waterproof protection, piece-mark labels, and bundle lists. Freight depends on gross weight, volume, panel dimensions, container utilization, destination, and Incoterm. Long or wide panels can reduce container efficiency even if their net weight is modest.

- Confirm identical drawing revision and takeoff boundary.
- Compare grating designation, bearing-bar dimensions, mesh, and finish.
- Separate plain panels from fabricated and irregular panels.
